"The Giant is rising. Face the might of the Nazi Zombies in their heartland. This is where it all began. This is where the master plan took shape. Is this where it all ends?"
— Level description

Der Riese (German for The Giant) is the fourth map in the Zombies game mode. It is the final Zombies map in Call of Duty: World at War. It is set in Group 935's main base of operations known as Waffenfabrik Der Riese, in Lower Silesia near Breslau, Germany (now Wrocław in Poland), and was the debut of the teleporters and the Pack-a-Punch Machine, a machine that for 5000 points allows players to upgrade their weapon. It was released in Map Pack 3 along with three multiplayer maps, on August 6, 2009.

It was then released for iOS on September 30, 2010, before being released alongside Nacht der Untoten, Verrückt and Shi No Numa as part of the Prestige and Hardened editions of Call of Duty: Black Ops on November 9, 2010. It was later released as part of the Rezurrection map pack, the final DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Der Riese would then be remade as a new experience in Call of Duty: Black Ops III called The Giant. It was released as a bonus for the Collector Editions, before being released to Season Pass holders and as its own stand-alone DLC.

Overview[]

The Ultimis crew returns to the Der Riese facility from the Rising Sun facility in 1945. Upon arriving, they must face limitless hordes of the undead as they continue on their journey.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Release[]

Der Riese returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops alongside Nacht der Untoten, Verrückt and Shi No Numa, featuring improved graphics and the Cold War-era weapons in Call of Duty: Black Ops from the Mystery Box. The World at War weapons that were purchasable off the wall are still available. Originally released as an exclusive for those who ordered the Hardened and Prestige edition of Call of Duty: Black Ops but it was later released with the Rezurrection map pack.

This version fixes the glitch when firing the Wunderwaffe DG-2, which would remove the effects of Juggernog if you suffered splash damage, and also changes so the DG-2 becomes gold when it's upgraded via the Pack-a-Punch machine.

Teleporters[]

There are three teleporters located around the map. When the player arrives, the teleporters are unlinked and cannot function. To link the teleporters, the player needs to turn on the power and proceed to link them to the mainframe. The player has to hold down the action button inside one of the teleporter, which starts a 30-second timer. The player, or an ally should then head back to the mainframe and hold the action button on the main frame. This will link the teleporter, meaning players can make use of the teleporters for the rest of the game. It will also lower the door to the Pack-a-Punch Machine and spawn a free power-up in front of the mainframe.

Each teleport from a linked teleporter costs 1500 points, and will occasionally spawn a free power-up. Beyond round 25, the frequency of power-up's will decrease and you may instead spawn Hellhounds instead. Any zombie that enters the teleporter as it's activated will be killed. After use, the teleporters will need some time to recharge.

Hellhounds[]

As in Shi No Numa, Hellhounds will spawn in exclusively every 4-6 rounds. Their round begins with the map turning foggy and the Demonic Announcer can be heard saying "Fetch me their souls!". Hellhounds will spawn in with a bolt of lightning and will stalk a player slowly around the map. Once they see a player, they will ignite and attack. Once players kill all Hellhounds, a Max Ammo power-up will spawn. After the third Hellhound round, Hellhounds will start spawning alongside regular zombies. If the player repeatedly uses the teleporters, the player will hear a quote from Samantha Maxis before up to 8 Hellhounds will spawn at once.

Power-Ups[]

All of the power-ups from the previous Zombies maps up to now appear in this map. Der Riese introduced Carpenter as a new power-up.

Electro-Shock Defenses[]

Returning from previous maps, the Electro-Shock Defenses are located under the bridge in the Courtyard and can be activated for 1000 points. After use, they require a cooling off period to recharge. Players are not able to pass through the defenses unless they have Juggernog.

New Additions[]

Der Riese debuted a couple of features that would go on to become staples of Zombies.

  • The Monkey Bomb, which would become a tactical weapon. When charged and thrown, Zombies would be lured towards it for a few seconds while it played its song. The monkey then detonates after completing it's song, damaging/killing any zombies nearby.
  • The Pack-a-Punch machine, located in the Mainframe. This machine offers players the ability to upgrade their weapons to new, improved versions. Upgrades come in various, and sometimes unpredictable forms. Weapons that have been upgraded receive a new chrome coloured camo with engravings.
  • The Bowie knife, upgrading the player's standard knife for 3000 points. This knife can one-hit kill zombies until round 10.
  • Zombies can now climb ledges and jump down from greater heights than previously shown.

Easter Eggs[]

Fly Trap[]

With a Pack-a-Punched weapon, the player must shoot a panel in the Left Corridor, near the doors to the Mainframe and the Animal Testing Lab. After this, eight objects will fly out in a ring, then spread across the map. The players will hear Samantha Maxis say "I want to play a game... Let's play hide and seek!". The items can then be found at three set locations.

The player must shoot these items with any weapon. When an item is shot, Samantha will keep speaking to all the players, saying "Yay, you found one!" for the first item, "Wow, you found another one!" for the second item. After the last item she says "You win... GAME OVER!", with the "GAME OVER" being said in a loud, angry tone.

Musical Easter Egg[]

To activate the musical Easter egg, the player needs to press the action button on three green glowing jars around the map. These jars that appear to have spines in them. Two of the jars are in the animal testing lab, and the third one is near Teleporter B, in a side room and can be activated in any order. Once all three have been found and activate, the song "Beauty of Annihilation" will be played to all players.

Other Zombies References[]

SOS ON ROOF

The second pillow word, displaying the message SOS.

HELP ON ROOF

The "help" sign in sand bags on one of the roofs.

  • At the top of the stairs from the Automobile Garage, if there is no other noises and the player listens closely, the player can faintly hear echoes of Samantha crying.
  • If the player stands near Juggernog, they can occasionally hear the sound of children singing a nursery rhyme.
  • Near the door that takes a player into the Animal Testing Lab, if the player looks to the left of the barrier on the wall, they can see the initials "J.D". These initials can also be found to the right of the barrier downstairs in spawn.
  • When heading into the Animal Testing Lab, there is a notice board on the wall to the right. On this board are several pictures, one which shows Call of the Dead where the lighthouse and part of the ship can be seen. One also shows Ascension where the rocket can be seen. The final one shows Paris with the Eiffel Tower clearly in view. Paris was originally intended to be Moon, with Moon still carrying Paris as it's code-name in the final release.
  • In the Animal Testing Lab itself, on a blackboard there is a note that says "H. Yena, Edward I know it was you". The note was written by Harvey Yena.
  • Looking up at the moon, the player can see orange dots aligned in a circle. It's implied that this is Griffin Station, the moon based of Group 935 and a the main area of future map Moon in Call of Duty: Black Ops.
  • In the room with Quick Revive, above the barricade one can see a sign that says L. Maxis M.D. Office. Implying that Maxis was originally working and based at Der Riese.
